A question about domain names?

expired domain names
Nathan asked:

If a domain name has been parked for a couple of years and is due to expire, how long after that expiry date will it take for that name to become available for purchase? I’m waiting for an expiry date but have been alerted by another user who is also trying to purchase a name. The domain name he wants has expired and it’s not available to him.
So I’m wondering if I’m going to have the same problem. How long can a company withold the sale of a domain name after expiry?
Thanks for your answers. I can’t choose BA here, I’ll leave it for the vote, thanks again.

    Depends on what company.

Some are slow some are instant. Try every few hours if you can. But i would register it first before anyone else does! = ]

    Hope this helps!

I agree with the previous answer, some release them instantly, as others will hold on to them for a bit especially if they get a lot of traffic.
But the chances are these days that if your waiting for a domain name to be released so is someone else. Keep checking every few hours. If your not fussed on who you register it with, keep checking the company its already registered with as it may appear available with them before others.

Most registrars hold expired domains anywhere from 30-80 days after they expire. If the domain is a good one it will usually get snapped up within seconds. Have a look at for more information.
