Lazyboy asked:

There is a domain that I want to buy that is expiring next month.

The domain registrar is currently a no-name domain seller. It looks like the person is not going to renew it. Should I backorder it through the no-name registrar (will they have first dibs or something?) or should I go through bigger names like pool.com or enom

I paid my subscription 2 weeks after it expired and now some anonymous person is using it. My domain provider won’t answer my letters or emails. Should I just give up on this and just register a new domain name and cut my losses?
http://domains.whois.com still shows MY details as domain owner. Other WHOIS sites says someone else. Confused!

Status: PENDING DELETE RESTORABLE
This is the status for a domain name that I like (not a TLD). However, the last updated date is a few days after the expiration date (Feb 2011). Will this domain expire, or has the owner already renewed it?

How do I register a domain name that currently doesn’t exist?

Space Invader101 asked:

Say I type in the browser address bar www.something.com and Bing or whatever search engine claims it doesn’t exist and offers alternative results. So I figure the domain’s never been registered or at least expired.

I was frustrated today when I tried to register such a site domain with Go Daddy and it says site invalid and offers site names I’m not interested in. How does this work? Do hosts like Go Daddy just resell old domains so I go elsewhere to start a never before used domain? I’m so confused. This is all new to me. Any help welcome.

So there’s a domain name I want. It expired on Jan 19, 2010 – however I still can’t buy it. I found out that I have to wait some more time. But I want to know exactly when it will be available for purchase.

Ok, so I really want this one domain name, lets say www.mydomainname.com (that’s not it), and when I go to see if I can buy it on Go Daddy, it says it’s not availible, but it gives me the option to “backorder”.

I then looked on Who Is and it says the domain expires 2011-01-09. Is that in January or September of 2011?

So, what does does backorder mean and should I do it?
Oh, and it’s a .com domain if that matters.

Uncle Pennybags asked:

Curiously enough, a domain name I used to own, but let lapse accidentally, was purchased by someone else. They have now let it lapse on 11/29/10. Go Daddy is the registrar, and they say it’s pending renewal or deletion.

How long do I have to wait until I can buy this domain name back? What’s the grace period for renewal?

Hi. Is there anyway to look up who used to own a domain name. eg. the domain has expired and is now available, but I want to find out who owned it a couple of years ago, before they let it expire. I know that domaintools.com will do it, but I’m looking for something free!
