Domain name for a web designer/artist? Also, any suggestions for hosting?

expired domain names
Lily asked:

I’ve got a website already, but I **** the name. I’m waiting for it to expire to get a new one, but I want a better name than before. (“Pandagami” *Gags*) I would be putting my web design, art (traditional, digital, pixel), and possibly some premade layouts for sites I use on there. I know it’s common for web designers to put their names as the domain, but I don’t think I want to do that. Any suggestions would be great! If you need any more info that might help you think of one, just say so.

Okay, the second thing I need is a host. Currently I’m using DotEasy, but I’m wondering if there’s any better ones. I should just need the basics for now, though I wouldn’t mind the ability to upgrade for more features. I would like a blog, a reasonable amount of web space, a reasonable amount of bandwith, at least one email account (type doesn’t matter), reliability, and possibly at least one or more sub-domain. Things like automatic form and gallery makers or other automatic things don’t matter to me at all. Thanks for any help!

Also, the name is much more important to me than the hosting, as I can do more research on it the hosting on my own.

    The domain name:

You should first ask yourself whether you are hoping to get traffic from search engines. If you are, it’s a good idea to have your main keywords in the domain (at the beginning is best). The domain name makes a big difference with search engines.

Having said that, getting traffic from search engine as a web designer can be difficult. So a memorable name might be more important for you.

Memorable domain names usually have a personality of some sort or activate the visual imagination. For example something like WebdesignGuru.com (personality) or PegasusWebdesign (visual) sticks much better than the boring ones.

In either case try and keep it as short as possible.

    Hosting:

As a web designer you might want to eventually host more than one website. Be prepared and choose one that enables you to do that with a single hosting account. That’s all explained here:

IX is reliable, cheap with good support and let’s you host multiple domains. That’s what I have been using and can recommend. The only reason I am switching to another host is because I want to go green.
I think most of these green hosting providers might suite your needs as well:

If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BlueHost service which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

They are a Multi-awarded Web Hosting which offer a Full-featured service only $6.95. You can see their Plan Details accompanied with reliable reviews regarding their service at:

    - Unlimited Transfer
    - Host UNLIMITED Domains (Support All Domain Names)
    - 2,500 POP/Imap Email Accounts

There are certainly better web hosting providers than DotEasy. Today there are many web hosting providers and you might become confused to choose which one. The fact is that having a poor web host could be causing you sales.

I recommend reading reviews so that you may compare and become more familiar with the hosting companies before making a decision. I have many websites and I often visit to get familiar with the current top hosts. There you will find the best and cheap website hosting, rankings, and reviews of the top web hosting provider’s worldwide.

You should also be aware of scams and unreliable hosting companies. I have been scammed before but since I started paying attention to the website I just mentioned I’ve been well protected.

    Good Luck!

As far as hosting goes you should consider going to a website like … they have an up to date pricing and features comparison chart for the top 2009 web hosts. The site is free to use and they also run really cool promotions and giveaways. I got a free iTunes gift certificate and highly recommend them.
