I’ve been trying to register for a website but all of the ones I’m interested in are taken by “under construction” or “coming soon” pages. I’ve tried using variations of what I wanted but they are taken by place holder type websites that aren’t really being used. How would I go about asking the availability of a domain name? Would I try to contact the company that’s hosting the site? Or is that going to make buying the name impossible if it looks like there’s interest?
Also, if a domain name is about to expire what would be the best way to register for it before it gets taken again? I wanted to use dreamhost to host the site, but it looks like I might have to register the domain name from someplace else. Any advice on this topic would be great. Thanks.

To find the owner of a website do a who is search at this will give you the owners contact information and the expiration date of the domain name.
As for registering expired domain names the names go through an expiration process after the actual expiration before they are made available to the pubic again.
For information on buying expired names look at:
You usually have to pay for a domain name
You can make a website for FREE at and then you can register a domain name if you chose.=%2Fdefault%2Easp&prog_id=freewebz
If the name is taken all you can do is contact the owner and make an offer for the name! There are services out there that will broker your deal, but you have to pay them! A domain name is the same as real property! the worth of domain is based on several factors. The traffic, the natural traffic, the back-links, and it is also based on predicted income! A great domain can be worth several hundred thousand to the right person or company. You can go to godaddy and find out who owns the site if they are public! If they are private you may have to go through a broker!
When a domain is about to expire? The owner will decide to auto renew or just forget to pay in time! You can pay x-tra to try and get the name if they forget and be first in line, but you have to do this before it expires. The kicker is , you may not get it the name. Or you can just wing it and wait and pay before he does!

Last part of question i will answer first. The owner of the domain name has the sole rights to ownership , he is given first choice if he wishes to renew the name. If he fails to renew in a required time frame the name is posted as available.
If you try to contact a company who has the name of a website ,be prepared to spend big bucks, cos it has cost them alot to advertise and promote their bussiness.
Domain name , and website ownership are two different things. I think you need to research what you want,
Domain name is what a isp gives you when you pay for it.
Owning a website is done through an isp to a domain name holder. A domain name holder DOES NOT HAVE TO HAVE A WEBSITE, it can just be used for a professional or for email purposes.
