Well, you can’t register what’s already registered.
Anyway, read the sponsoring registrar’s fine print to get a hint or so what they’ll do to an expired domain name. Many domain registrars nowadays will try to auction an expired domain name to an interested buyer before deleting it altogether.
A .com domain name especially goes through a series of “phases” in its “life cycle”. It can take anywhere from 36 to even 76 days before one has a chance of possibly getting it, but whatever its current status is can give you an idea when to prepare.
