You have to renew it every year.
If the domain name is not already yours then you will have to contact those who issued the Domain Name to begin with.
It depends on how valuable the name is.

It depends how much a existing domain worth.
Try google search for that particular domain to check how much it is popular. More it is listed in search engines more is the benifit.
Also older domains are also good.
